Start with the role, not the headline
A job advertisement is the beginning of a conversation. Ask whether the current opening is over-the-road, regional, local or dedicated, and which home location it supports. Confirm whether you are discussing an employee position or an independent contractor arrangement; the obligations and financial details can differ.
Understand how pay is calculated
Ask what work the quoted pay covers and how the calculation works: mileage, a percentage of revenue, hourly pay or another structure. Ask which miles are paid, when payment is issued and how detention, layover, extra stops and breakdown time are treated. Request the current compensation terms in writing. A headline figure alone cannot tell you what a working week will pay.
Make home time specific
Ask how long a typical trip lasts, how home time is requested and how changes to a route are handled. Explain your location and preferences early. Confirm the actual arrangement for the opening you are considering instead of assuming that a general company statement applies to every role.
Ask about the equipment
Discuss the truck assigned to the role, sleeper setup, transmission, maintenance process and how equipment issues are reported. Ask whether there are driver-facing cameras or other monitoring systems and how those systems are used. Equipment details should come from the recruiter or operations team for the current opening.
Prepare for onboarding
Ask which documents are needed, how orientation works and whether any travel or orientation costs apply. Confirm the application process and the official contact before sending sensitive documents. An initial inquiry can usually begin with contact information, location and driving experience.
Keep a simple comparison sheet
For each opportunity, record the role, pay calculation, home-time agreement, equipment details and unanswered questions.
